Throwback: Castillo de San Marcos, Saint Augustine FL

The towers in Spain reminded me of the forts I had been to in the United States. Forts that the Spanish built when they were a world power, extending their reach to the West. One of these forts is Castillo de San Marcos in Saint Augustine, Florida.

It is the oldest masonry fort located in the continental US. The fort was designed by Spanish architect Ignacio Daza. It stood against the attacks by the English and the ravages US Civil war.

Today, it is under the care of the National Park Service. Rangers in guardia civil costume demonstrate cannon firing at designated times.

Saint Augustine is one of my favorite places in the US. It is so full of history and at Castillo de San Marco National Monument does not only offer a glimpse of history, but also boasts of a beautiful view!
