Free Friday: De Soto National Memorial, Florida

In May 1539, an army of over 600 Spanish soldiers led by explorer and conquistador Hernando de Soto landed in the Tampa Bay area in Florida. This landing and the firs extensive exploration by Europeans of Southern America is commemorated at the De Soto National Memorial located in Florida’s Manatee County, 5 miles west of the city of Bradenton.

The Visitor Center displays exhibits about the De Soto Expedition and the life of the natives.

Visitors come to enjoy the park’s nature trails and guided trail walks, do some fishing, bird watching, and picnicking, as well as watching a movie on the De Soto Expedition and a re-enactment which culminates the living history camp that runs December to April.

Park admission, course, is FREE.
