Where the US Civil War Began

April 12, 1861 marked the beginning of the battle of North and South in the new world. Confederate soldiers open fired from Charleston Harbor at Fort Sumter manned by Union soldiers.

To remember this momentous event, the National Parks Service has restored and preserved Fort Sumter, South Carolina.



Visitors could get to Fort Sumter by boat from the Visitor Education Center in Concord Street downtown Charleston and Patriots Point.
